Recently, the discussion around Artificial Intelligence specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), has reached a fever pitch. The prevailing narrative is that these tools are becoming “better” than us. Just today, I watched a LinkedIn video of a gentleman, likely in his 50s, asserting that the code LLMs produce is now “way better” than what most Senior Software Engineers can write.
Statements like this force me to pause and reflect.
Let me be clear: I use AI tools every day. In fact, I used an LLM to help organize and polish the very article you are reading right now. I believe these tools are incredible engines of speed; they can generate massive boilerplate in seconds, helping anyone springboard into a project. The goal of this article is not to say we shouldn’t use them, it is to define who is actually in charge.
My understanding of a Senior Software Engineer is not defined by the speed of their syntax. It is defined by their ability to synthesize business domains, security contexts, and long-term maintainability into a coherent whole. When we look past the hype, we find three fundamental limitations that machines have not yet overcome.
1. The “Frozen World” Paradox
I understand the argument that LLMs generate “security-approved” code based on their training data. But here lies the trap: Best practices are moving targets.
Take, for instance, OAuth 1.0. When it was released, it was the gold standard. Today, it is deprecated and considered a security risk. If we rely solely on LLMs, how does the machine “realize” that a pattern it learned yesterday is now an exploit today? It cannot. It only knows what it was fed.
Consider this thought experiment: Imagine if humans stopped evolving 20 years ago. If we stopped creating new frameworks and optimizing languages in 2005, and we trained a machine only on that data, could it invent the modern cloud architecture we use today? No. It would be an expert at writing the best possible code for 2005.
If we stop producing new insights, the AI stops evolving. It cannot look at the current state of the world and say, “This standard is no longer good enough. I need to invent something better.” Only a human, feeling the friction of a bad tool, has the impetus to invent a new one.
2. Neuroplasticity vs. The Static Model
I am not a neurosurgeon, nor a brain expert. But I know that human beings possess neuroplasticity: we physically make new neurological connections when we learn.
For LLMs, the “brain” is static. Despite having access to the entire internet, the number of parameters (neurons) is fixed during operation. When a machine writes code, it is performing a statistical prediction, not a cognitive expansion.
- For a Human: A mistake is a biological signal. It triggers a new pathway. We use errors as a feedback loop to literally upgrade our minds.
- For a Machine: A mistake is just a probabilistic path that wasn’t pruned. It doesn’t “feel” the error, and it doesn’t learn from it unless an engineer retrains it.
This is why two engineers can read the same documentation and come up with two entirely different, creative architectures, while two instances of an LLM will converge on the average. We create; they compute.
3. The Architect and the Hammer
This leads to the ultimate question: If we keep feeding machines the data they themselves produced, how long before we run out of meaningful signal? This is the risk of Model Collapse.
The systems we consider “perfect” today will be abandoned tomorrow because user needs change. Humans reinvent software not just because we can, but because we must to solve new problems. If machines cannot predict where the industry is going, they cannot replace the people who steer the ship.
So, what is a Senior Engineer actually paid for? If it’s just to type code, then yes, the machine wins. But Senior Engineers are paid for Context, Risk Management, and Accountability.
- We know what is likely to break specifically for our team.
- We know the history of why a decision was made.
- We are accountable when things go wrong.
Using AI to write this article didn’t make the AI the author, it made it the typewriter. I provided the thesis, the lived experience, and the reasoning; the AI merely arranged the words. Until a machine can look at its own output, reflect on it, and decide to invent a completely new paradigm because the current one “just doesn’t feel right,” the human expert remains irreplaceable.
We are the source of the signal, the machine is simply the echo.
